2 News That Triggered Some Feelings

Today, I got to read two different news items which demarcated the difference between Indian and Western Societies more clearly.  First news was from United Kingdom where Parliament Voted in favor of Gay Marriages. The other news was from USA, where government talked about giving same facilities to the spouse of Gay Troops as are available to the spouse of a Straight solider.

It is not so that there were no protests in these countries against equal rights being given to Gays, but what is the ultimate duty of a Government? Keeping appeased those who oppose equal rights to a group of citizens that too without any valid reasons or granting equal rights to all citizens irrespective of their sexuality and thereby upholding ‘Justice to all’ principle? Perhaps these countries are not called ‘Developed’ merely because of Economic Prosperity and Military Might, rather it is more due to the logical thinking of state which is responsible for equality among all citizen and protection of their fundamental rights.

Anyway, by all these standards, India is not anywhere near to be a ‘Developed’ country. Developing  Economic Prosperity and Military Might overnight are beyond anyone’s power, but what is stopping government of this country to grant equal rights to all its citizen with immediate effect? But sadly! Even public discussions are motivated here by what is considered to be ‘Fashionable’. Otherwise why the media is silent over the undeclared ban of society on fundamental rights of Gays. This is the same Media which raised all hue and cry over a Mufti in Kashmir banning a music band of 3 teenage girls and Tamil Nadu Govt. banning Kamal Hasan’s movie ‘Viswaroopam’.

I don’t say that these issues should not be discussed and debated freely in the society but the issue of thwarting an individual’s right of ‘freedom of expression’ is certainly not more important than the situation of depriving thousands of living human beings from their basic right to live like a living creature! A right which is available even to animals, is being snatched away from thousands of humans and Govt. and Courts are moving at their own pace. What is the reason for government taking years and rebuke from courts before deciding over such a simple issue which a 17-18 years old person of sound mind can decide in minutes!

14th February is approaching and lots of youngsters in cities like Delhi and Mumbai are worried and are thinking- “What will happen if our right of spending a leisure time with our beloveds holding their hands in public places like shopping malls and place like Connaught Place, is taken away from us?” For them it will not be less than the Inca’s doomsday prophecy coming true. My only request to my such straight friends is- “Please use this occasion for thinking about your those Gay friends who are in closet and who have always been deprived from this right. You can spend some other day with your ‘Dates’ the way you want because that day may not be that advantageous for some petty organizations to come into Media limelight, but what about your those Gay Friends who due to your indifference and due threats of society, are forced to kill all their young desires and may not enjoy even for a single day in their whole life; who live in such perpetual state of no rights! Who although are human beings, but can’t even exercise the right of selecting their mate which even animals do without any effort and restriction! But alas! you people are more busy in cracking jokes on Gays and laughing on utterly inappropriate and insensitive scenes in Hindi Movies which make fun of Gays.”

You may well be taking it as a sign of my complaining nature, but tell me one thing. What else should I do when I see all this happening in those countries which our country wants to join? I don’t have means like Kamal Hasan and his likes so as to think of shifting abroad. Nor is the case that I don’t love my own country or don’t acknowledge my right over it. I want to live in this country and that too with equal rights. In such a situation whom should I complain the sense injustice I am experiencing each day! Whom should I not fight with? Please Tell.
