Despite of all propaganda and hatred, steadily more and more gay people are resolving to get married one day. Although this phenomenon is presently restricted to metropolitan cities but due to advancement of technology and urbanization of rural India, soon other gays will also start thinking about such dream coming true. Although this silent revolution is happening at many places in the hearts of individuals, still we have miles to go before gay marriages become reality of our times.
Leaving certain issues like 'Legal Recognition' and 'Social Acceptance' for some other day won't work. A lot of intrinsic problems faced by gays are due to these two issues. A common observation of many people in gay community is, the young gays of age 18-24 years are more courageous and enthusiastic about marrying a boy. Most of the 25-30 years olds are either already married to a girl or have decided against marrying a boy. This is the class which shall regret the most when they will see two married men holding their hands in public say 10-15 years from now. But the present is not less challenging for those who want to marry a boy.
Finding a suitable person to marry is the most serious problem faced by those who have decided to fight. Since the conventional methods of finding a life partner normally available to straights, are non-existent in the case of gays, the task of finding a suitable person to spend life with, becomes more challenging. No support what so ever from family and friends is available to a gay person who is willing to spend his life with a person. And the top of all this, most gays remain hidden and through social networking the few who come into one's contact are not necessarily willing to marry a boy. No one other than such a gay guy can imagine the difficulty, fatigue and despair involved in finding a person to spend life with. Hostility of society, cruel jokes by insensitive people, no one to share your problems with takes you to the breaking point where your courage almost seem to leave you. Still hats off to such guys who hold on to their principles and dignity.
For sure society cannot praise such guys at present due to the inherent prejudice, but certainly such people must be remembered for the great task they are trying to do. Many people who are not so courageous believe that those who show courage must have some special conducive circumstances due to which they are able to do it. Their myth can be busted only when they take some pain to know about such people because then they will see that most of such people are not as much privileged as they are. Many of them are the only sons of their parents, many of them are from economically weaker families, many of them have very orthodox and conservative environment at home, many of them have many relatives making roving inquiries about their lives! And many many of them have all these problems together!!
It is high time that society takes the stock of the wrongs done by it. Lunatics shall be there in each society all the times, but it is the duty of the government not to allow such fringes to prevail. Indian government is yet to learn a lot of things even though more than 60 years have elapsed since Independence. Honorable Prime Minister of India must learn at least something from French President who despite of huge protests in Paris by homophobic crowds had this legislation passed which allowed same sex marriage in the country. Alas! But the government of the day has many more important things to do than to enforce the fundamental rights conferred upon everyone by the Constitution of India. But it will have to happen sooner or later. Till the time gays will have to utilize their inherent courage to fight all odds which society and destiny brings in their lives.
